Romeo y Julieta takes its name from Shakespeare’s tragic lovers and was established in 1875. The brand rose to international fame in the early 20th century under the guidance of Don “Pepin” Fernandez, a marketing visionary who was among the first to recognize the power of the cigar band as a branding tool. By the end of his tenure, more than 20,000 bands were used in production.
One of Romeo y Julieta’s most famous admirers was Winston Churchill. After his visit to Cuba in 1946, a special cigar band bearing his name was created, and the brand’s most iconic vitola (178 mm length, 47 ring gauge) was named in his honor—the “Churchill.”
