Villiger was founded in Switzerland by a couple, Jean and Louise Villiger. When her husband passed away, Louise continued to manage the company alone for 16 years, something unprecedented for a woman of that time. In 1918, the Villiger brothers Max and Hans took over the business and turned it into one of the largest in Europe. In 1951, Heinrich Villiger took over the company and acquired Cuban tobacco, attempting to make the company the largest private supplier of Cuban tobacco in Europe, a feat he accomplished.
