Villiger was founded in Switzerland by a couple Jean and Louise Villiger. When her husband died Louise continued to manage the company alone for 16 years something unheard of for a woman of the time. In 1918 the Villiger brothers Max and Hans took over the business and made it one of the largest in Europe. In 1951 Heinrich Villiger took over the company and bought Cuba Tobacco trying to make the company the largest private supplier of Cuban tobacco in all of Europe which he succeeded in doing.
