The history of Xikar begins in 1994 in Kansas. Kurt Van Keppel, who is now the president of Xikar, wanted to purchase a good cigar cutter but found many of the cheap models and high-end models to have low performance. So, he started working with Scott Almsberger to design a more ergonomic cigar cutter. The result was the Xi cutter, which they first manufactured in their garage and has since become the market leader.
The name “XIKAR” comes from the word “sikar,” which is said to be the first Spanish spelling of the Taino word for cigar. The Taino were the indigenous peoples of Spain and Cuba, where Columbus first landed and discovered tobacco. They changed the “S” to an “X” (representing two blades) and dropped the “i,” resembling a cutter cutting a cigar!
